Have you ever heard of Stewart’s Point, California? Neither had we, until we came upon this unique and modern 4,905 square-foot home on Highway 1 near Gualala. This home is located on a whopping 218 acres of forest on the Sonoma Coast and has been featured in numerous interior and architectural books and magazines.
The house is composed of three pavilions connected by a floating metal roof and multiple decks. The rustic wood of the decks and the outdoor fireplace warm up the modern feel of the house.

Floor to ceiling windows throughout much of the house give the impression that the rooms are floating above the ocean and the barn door separating the dining room from the kitchen is a nice touch.
The chef’s kitchen and open great room is the focal point of the house, with multiple work stations and sinks, a walk-in refrigerator (we will say it again…walk-in refrigerator!) and custom stainless and stone countertops. There is even an island housing a built-in media center. The concrete floors are heated to make the home feel cozy during the winter and there are three fireplaces. This house is just waiting for its next party. With four bedrooms and four and a half baths, the home has a master suite with an adjoining office and its own deck. It is located above the kitchen area in the main building while a separate pavilion houses three additional bedroom suites and a living room for guests.
As a bonus, the Sonoma Coast Home is only two miles from the Stewart’s Point General Store, which is known for its vintage feel, assortment of clever items and necessities and spectacular sandwiches (it even has a bar and restaurant upstairs). We keep thinking of that old saying about people who live in glass houses, but we’d be willing to give it a try.
