A new report released this week by rental market website Apartment List, claims that 56 percent of Sonoma County renters are cost-burdened*, six percent more than the national average.

Of that 56 percent, 26 percent are considered severely cost-burdened, a classification that means they spend more than 50 percent of their household income on rent.

Yikes! For residents taking home Sonoma County’s median renter income of $57,281, a rent of $2,387 would be considered “severely burdened.”

San Francisco, with its larger proportion of high-income households, fared better slightly better with a cost-burdened population of 47 percent.

The report, derived from the 2017 Census American Community Survey data, analyzed national, state, county and metropolitan figures for 2007, 2016 and 2017.

Rental prices have been a hot topic in Sonoma County after last October’s wildfires destroyed over 5,300 homes in Sonoma County. Median rental prices are between $1,954 and $2,600, according to August 2018 reports.
