A recent report from the California Association of Realtors asserts that only one in five Sonoma County households can afford the median home price of $695,000.

With more than  5,300 Sonoma County homes lost in last October’s wildfires, competition for available housing has led to record- breaking months for both home prices and rental rates. In June, the median home price rose to an eye-popping $700,000, but has fallen slightly in recent months.

The good news is that there are more homes on the market which may lead to lower prices.

Pacific Union International senior vice president Rick Laws has noted that inflated home costs have dissuaded buyers from purchasing. Homes are sitting around for longer, forcing sellers to reduce prices.

There is now  a larger selection of move-in ready properties than a couple of months ago.
